ANDREWS AIR BASE ELEMENTARY
November 22, 2011, Zamboanga City - READ Philippines donated books to Andrews Air Base Elementary School in Zamboanga City through the 530th Air Base Wing led by Colonel Emeraldo Magnaye PAF. Click here to read the report.

The School, established in 1968 through the efforts of Col. Pedro Alcantara, is located inside the Andrews Air Base with student population of 463 (Grades 1-6).  Twenty percent of the students are dependents of Air Force enlisted personnel and 80% are from neighboring communities. Due to its location, the School does not get regular support from the local Department of Education programs as it is perceived to be part of the Air Force Logistics Planning. Current Base Commander Col. Emeraldo Magnaye believes helping the School is important in maintaining peace and security of Mindanao.

I also thank my colleagues from MinLand who also gave some monetary donations and most of all, who made all these things happen.

Update on Construction of High School Extension for Barangay Cabilao, North Cotabato
June 15, 2011 - EJ Matela, Executive Director of MinLand Foundation, sends the following messages to READ regarding the high school building project in Barangay Cabilao:

Doreen,

Attached is summary of expenses paid from funds from READ Philippines for the school building. The "Kalakat" is woven bamboo strips used for walls.

We will upload photos and send you progress reports.  The community provided labor and the 'bayanihan" spirit began this morning. MinLand took care of transportation and hauling of materials.

While the walls were being installed, a clash between government troops and an armed group erupted within a few kilometers from the school site. But people were preoccupied with putting up the walls and did not mind the bursts of gunfire. MinLand staff urged workers to halt construction by Noon to prepare for evacuation. Happily, evacuation was not necessary as the incident was later contained. The walls will be completed tomorrow or Saturday. We were saddened to see the people's high level of tolerance for violence - as if it is the norm.  We hope our collaborative efforts will contribute towards peace.

Thank you for supporting this important project. Best regards,

EJ

Proposed High School Extension, Barangay Cabilao, North Cotabato
May 26, 2011 - READ Philippines is raising funds to help build a classroom building in Barangay Cabilao. EJ Matela, Executive Director of MinLand Foundation, READ Philippines' partner organization in Mindanao, writes:

Doreen,

I am attaching photos of the temporary classroom of the incoming high school freshmen for school year 2011-2012.  Also attached is a partial list of enrollees.

The community/barangay decided to take a gradual approach to establishing a full high school in Barangay Cabilao. This will facilitate easier documentary requirements, multi-level bureaucratic approvals, and resources. So this coming June, only the First Year High School Level will open. Next year, probably two high school levels.

For this year, we shall be helping them secure materials and finances to procure walls and blackboards and books (the boxes of books from READ that arrived this year will be helpful). Also armchairs and lighting. We hope all will turn out well.

Thanks and regards,

EJ

  • Children are leaders of tomorrow. Children must be equipped with better education to help prepare them for the future.
  • The country's future success depends on an educated and well-informed citizenry. Investing in the education of children is tantamount to ensuring the country's future success.
  • Giving back to the community is a duty of every citizen. Filipino expatriates who have been blessed with more must share their blessings with the less fortunate.

The dividing line between rich and poor in the Philippines today is education. When Filipino children live in poverty, literacy becomes a critical link in a chain that can either tie children to a life of poverty or be used to pull them out of it.

For children living in poverty, every day is filled with challenges and missed opportunities. Move on Philippines believes that education is the best road to a better life for most of these children. With a strong educational foundation, children in even the most impoverished and remote communities have a chance at college, a career, and a ticket out of poverty.

*****

Poor rural communities in the Philippines are often deprived of a quality education. Lack of school facilities and equipment, dilapidated classrooms, poorly prepared teachers, lack of textbooks and good educational resources or references are negative factors that hinder children from  excelling and overcoming the challenges of learning and going to school.
